Eternals is now the lowest-rated MCU film ever — and things could get even worse
Eternals is now the lowest-rated MCU film ever — and things could go even worse

In a surprising turn of events, Eternals has merely go the lowest-rated MCU picture ever on popular review assemblage site Rotten Tomatoes. Its score is even lower than the likes of Thor: The Dark Earth and The Incredible Blob. Could it be Curiosity's commencement true bomb?
Currently, Eternals has a score of 60% from 126 reviews which is the everyman ever for an MCU film. The state of affairs is even bleaker when you look at its Height Critic score; there, the motion-picture show has merely managed a poor 57% from RT-certified elevation critics. Should Eternals drib even i more percentage indicate, information technology will also earn the dubious honour of being the MCU's first movie to be "rated rotten."

Until now the lowest-rated MCU movies were Thor: The Night Globe (66%), The Incredible Blob (67%), and Iron Homo ii (72%), but it'due south looking likely that Eternals will take the unwanted crown. It will also exist only the third MCU movie non to exist "rated fresh" by the review compilation site.
Eternals reviewing poorly has come equally quite a shock. MCU films have been considered adequately bankable over the last decade, with even the franchise's almost generic entries, such as Blackness Widow (79%), earning respectable reviews. Eternals is also directed past Chloe Zhao, who won Best Director for Nomadland at this year's Oscars, and so if anything the moving-picture show was expected to set a new criterion for Marvel movies.
Peradventure some of the responsibleness for the movie's disappointing critical reception can exist attributed to the original source fabric. The Eternals are extremely niche characters in the Marvel canon and accept had only a few comic volume runs since they were created by Jack Kirby in the 1970s. They are generally considered a lower-tier Curiosity property.
More than Eternals review scores are expected to trickle in over the coming days ahead of the film's release on Friday (Nov. five), but the writing is on the wall with this one: typically, RT scores beginning high and so slowly drop over time. It's therefore more likely that Eternals will driblet further than it is to claw its way in a higher place whatsoever other MCU film.
Whether or not the film's disappointing reviews will have any bear upon on its box office performance remains to be seen. It'south unlikely that hardcore Marvel fans will be dissuaded, but a (relatively) low RT score could be an indication that Eternals won't connect with the general audience the way almost MCU movies do.
Thankfully, Marvel Studios is unlikely to stop 2021 on a bum annotation, with the Disney Plus Hawkeye series streaming this month and Spider-Man: No Way Home hitting theatres in December. And based on the early fizz around both, information technology seems likely they'll become a meliorate reception than Eternals.
